AccorHotels tests facial recognition in Brazil

AccorHotels has started a facial recognition trial at a Pullman Hotel in Sao Paulo, Brazil in an effort to improve customer service delivery, according to a zdnet report. Selected guests of the hotel's loyalty program will be the first users in the trial phase. Guests can use their face to check in at the hotel or an information kiosk and then use their faces to unlock rooms instead of using room keycards.

The UAE Cabinet has approved the issuance of legislation to ensure equal pay for men and women working in the country. Salalah Rotana Oman debuts organic garden

Salalah Rotana Resort in Oman recently inaugurated an organic garden on its premises. The new garden is part of the hotel’s corporate social responsibility towards embracing sustainable practices, a statement said. An initiative developed to meet the needs of its daily operations, the garden occupies 500 square metre space and houses four types of produces including tomato, mint leaves, cucumber and radish. To facilitate the germination process, seeds were initially planted in a box and grown for 15 days after which they were transferred to the garden area.

IBM launches Watson Assistant for hospitality to enhance guest engagement

At the annual IBM Think conference held in Las Vegas, USA from March 18-19, IBM launched Watson Assistant with special focus on hospitality and automotive industries. The new AI assistant differs from exiting virtual voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant by offering a “white label” service. Which basically means hotels can use their own products such as Hilton’s ‘Connie’ robot but use IBM’s Watson Assistant to provide the concierge-like services that creates a “differentiated and personalised experience for hotel guests,” a statement on IBM’s website claims.

Waldorf Astoria Dubai launches mobile ordering in outdoor areas

Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah has partnered with wi-Q Technologies, a British company offering web-based mobile ordering and payment solution on the property’s outdoor areas. Guests at the hotel can browse, order and pay for poolside food and drinks via a web-based menu on their own device - without downloading an app. The menu, which can be displayed in a variety of languages, even allows guests to charge items to their rooms.
