In the Event of a Cyberattack: Public Relations and Responding to the Media

HFTP Connect·17 September 2018
Your organization has experienced a data breach. How do you handle telling your customers? One of the key pieces to a data breach response is the announcement to the public and affected individuals. How a company deals with public relations after a breach determines how successful they will be at recovering from the breach. Cyberattacks and data breaches are the top threats to a business’s reputation, and they are as impactful as a major environmental incident such as an oil spill (Cyber Data-Risk…, 2014).

HFTP · 6 September 2018
Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) and Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) announced during Hospitality Upgrade's Annual CIO Summit that they established a partnership geared toward strengthening the progression of the technology in the hospitality industry. The agreement is based on both organizations' desire to use each group's complementary strengths and resources to advance technology in the hospitality and travel industries."For years, HFTP and HTNG have worked in parallel in support of the hospitality technology industry," said HFTP CEO Frank Wolfe. "Each organization has made great progress toward bringing the community together to establish education, standards, best practices and resources. Recognizing that working closer together would better serve the industry, the leadership of HTNG and HFTP has formed this partnership."The two organizations are member-based nonprofits which draw from their volunteers' extensive knowledge bases to develop and present educational opportunities, industry standards, best practices and other resources. Through this agreement, HFTP and HTNG will cross-promote the programs of each organization to maximize the benefits and impacts of these efforts."HTNG and HFTP have played important roles in advancing technology in the hospitality and travel industry. With similar, but complementary missions, this partnership will bring the organizations closer together and codify the informal cooperation that has existed since HTNG's founding 16 years ago," said Mike Blake, CEO of HTNG.The partnership establishes a corresponding presence within each organization's events and activities. The groups will promote each other's events on online calendar listings and news sites; as well as support each group's programs, including HFTP certifications and the HTNG Workgroups. Also, both HFTP and HTNG will invite leadership representatives from the other organization to participate in events, programs and advisory councils. One of the first things the two organizations have agreed to do is to resurrect the Hospitality Technology Strategic Initiatives Council, co-founded by HFTP and HTNG in 2009. The council was composed of senior-level, industry leaders and related hospitality/travel associations to discuss pressing industry needs as they relate to hospitality technology. The council will work to identify industry initiatives and will determine the best possible home for these initiatives to reduce duplication efforts.

Outsourcing Cybersecurity and Contracts

Other companies may have an IT manager on staff, but outsource the cybersecurity responsibilities to a company that specifically focuses on the increasing dangers pertaining to cyber threats. There can be multiple reasons why a company would decide to outsource cybersecurity; therefore, companies must know how to traverse finding the company that is the right fit for their organization.

HFTP Announces 2018 CHAE of the Year Recipient: Elijah Spiritoso, CHAE

HFTP ·30 August 2018
Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) will honor Elijah Spiritoso, CHAE as the 2018 Certified Hospitality Accountant Executive (CHAE) of the Year at its upcoming Annual Convention this October. The CHAE of the Year award honors the individual that scored the highest on the CHAE certification exam within a given year. HFTP's Annual Convention will be held from October 24-26, 2018 at the Omni Louisville Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky USA - online registration is open now.Spiritoso started in hospitality as a busboy for a local Philadelphia restaurant, and then became a server at the downtown Hilton Garden Inn in Philadelphia while in high school. Spiritoso graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with a Bachelor's in Business Administration, where he was a finance major. He continued to work as a food server in both a-la-carte and banquets, working for many well-known restaurants, caterers and hotels in the area. One Five-Diamond rated hotel, The Rittenhouse, became Spiritoso's main employer, until one day he was offered a position to become the hotel's new income auditor. He was quickly promoted - based on his ability to automate and streamline processes - to condominium accountant then to staff accountant, working directly under the CFO. After many years, he became a controller for GF Management, then a restaurant group. Spiritoso now works as the controller for Frog Commissary, the exclusive in-house food provider for The Franklin Institute."The CHAE certification was very helpful in obtaining my new position, as it showed my willingness to continue to stay educated on the fundamental industry knowledge," said Spiritoso. "Employers need to trust accountants at the executive level, so being a CHAE gives added confidence that I am managing the business properly and staying continually educated on the latest industry trends. Every hospitality accounting professional would greatly benefit from studying and retaining the knowledge covered while obtaining a CHAE - it shows that you are a true professional that is serious about your career and future."I would like to personally thank everyone at HFTP that worked hard to make the CHAE certification possible, and a special thanks to HFTP Certification Manager Robin Bogdon for guiding me through the process," Spiritoso continued. "I also want to thank all of the other CHAEs out there every day working hard to represent the ideals of the certification. I am truly humbled and honored to be the CHAE of the year and will wear the honor with pride throughout my entire career."The CHAE professional designation is an industry designation showing competency in the area of accounting, and is acknowledged throughout the hospitality industry as it elevates the professionalism of both the recipient and the industry. More than 1,500 hospitality accountants, from several countries, have earned the CHAE designation through HFTP since the certification program began in 1981. Annual Convention is approaching quickly, taking place October 24-26, 2018 at the Omni Louisville Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky USA. And, capping off the 2018 events calendar is HITEC Dubai, which will be held December 5-6, 2018 at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, UAE.

A Few of My Favorite (HITEC) Things

HFTP Connect·29 June 2018
It is hard to believe that HITEC is over. If you had the chance to read my pre-HITEC blog, you might recall that I was fretting about being ready for HITEC. Now that it is over, I cannot believe how fast it went by. HITEC this year was a great show for me — and I am going to imagine for a lot of others as well.

Insight on HFTP's Largest HITEC in History - Content and Reporting from HITEC Houston

HFTP Connect·29 June 2018
Last week HFTP hosted the largest HITEC in the event’s 46-year history. Taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas USA, the over 6,650 attendees had access to four days of industry-specific education in a variety of formats, an exhibit hall featuring over 380 companies, and numerous social events and parties, beginning with the Opening Party presented by Samsung and HFTP at the House of Blues. Just that sentence alone presents an overwhelming summary of activity crammed into four days. Imagine being there and maximizing what you could take-away from such a wide-ranging program. It is difficult to do.

Club & Hotel Controllers Conference 2018: Count me in for 2019!

HFTP Connect·28 June 2018
The Club & Hotel Controllers Conference was my first HFTP event, and I can assure you, it will not be my last! Each person involved in it went above and beyond to make sure everything from registration onward ran smoothly. Staff members and volunteers were welcoming and helpful, and the venue was perfectly signaled so that there was no trouble finding the allocated rooms for the sessions — and believe me, given the size of the George R. Brown Convention Center, this is not an easy feat!

Being a Service Critic is in my DNA

HFTP Connect·28 June 2018
Being in the hospitality industry, we are a little more critical than the rest of the population when we experience issues as a guest at a hotel. At the same time, I believe we can also be exceedingly complimentary when our guest experience goes above and beyond our typical expectations, as we know how much work staff puts in to make a guest’s stay memorable. When issues do arise, it is all about recovery and what staff does or does not do that drives the result in either direction. There were solutions at HITEC that certainly showcased several examples of how we can track and respond to situations with our guests.

Remember HITEC Houston?

HFTP Connect·27 June 2018
Written By Kara Heermans, HITEC Guest Blogger - I hope you have not forgotten the excitement of HITEC® Houston already — but I know how quickly returning to a large inbox and a pile of to-do items can cast aside your intentions for all those good ideas garnered from the conference. While it is tempting to throw a couple new pens in your desk drawer, entertain your kids with the blinking fidget spinners, and let the stack of business cards start to gather dust until HITEC next year… DON’T!
