Cashing In

Hotel Interactive - 22 September 2017
There is no doubt that Reno, NV, has seen its share of big bets. Some have paid off over the past 86 years since the city legalized gambling. But as is the nature of the beast, most have not. Count Don Carano among the former. In 1973, Carano went against the advice of almost everyone he knew and founded the Eldorado Hotel Casino between Sierra and Virginia Streets in downtown Reno. It was the first property north of the city’s railroad tracks. Most viewed Carano’s gamble the same as a lone prospector’s chances of striking silver in the Sierra Nevada mountains—slim and none.

Scaling Back Expectations

Hotel Interactive - 18 September 2017
The lodging industry began the year with a good deal of uncertainty, much of which was the result of a new administration in the White House and weakening fundamentals, but there is far more clarity as we approach the two-thirds mark of the year.

We have a community in need, and the fact that the factory is dry and operational gives us the ability to pitch in and make a difference. Our goal is to provide a comfortable place to sleep for as many people as possible during this disaster.”

A Covenant Of Salt

Hotel Interactive - 12 September 2017
David Bowd and Kevin O’Shea may be the only two hoteliers who are not anxiously scanning the horizon for the next wave of industry altering travel technology. Both former executives at Morgans Hotels Group, the two are quietly building a hotel company that has the potential to be the industry’s next great disruptor. Salt Hotels, launched in 2015, was born of a vision to marry the intimate service levels of bed-and-breakfasts and local inns with the modish design of lifestyle hotels. In 2013, Bowd, chief executive, and O’Shea, creative director, opened the first property, Salt House Inn, in Provincetown, MA.

The Smell Of Success

Hotel Interactive - 7 September 2017
Hotel experiences involve primarily the sight and sound senses, but many hotels and resorts are now using custom scent branding to incorporate the sense of smell into the guest experience. Many consider smell the most powerful and emotional of the senses. A pleasant, clean scent throughout a hotel property, particularly in the lobby area, is a great first impression for guests to begin their hotel/resort experiences. It can help create brand awareness and be instrumental in gaining repeat business.

How Much Is Too Much?

Hotel Interactive - 1 September 2017
The recently concluded BITAC® Casino Resorts provided an in-depth look at technology with a panel discussion that touched on everything from cyber security to effectively mining big data, in addition to determining the right level of commitment to technology. During the “Tapping Into Technology” session, the executives talked about finding the balance between too much technology and not enough. Steve Murphy, executive consultant, Hospitality & Gaming Consulting, commented. “In prior early days when you went to the hotel you were always seeing new technology; newer than what you had at your home. We started designing the in-room experience at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas at the same time CityCenter was being built, so there was some collaboration going on about how much is too much?” he said.

How Airbnb Might Affect Entry-Level Workers

Hotel Interactive - 28 August 2017
Raising the argument that Airbnb’s business model does not directly support the local economy is not anything new for the hospitality industry, and even more so for real estate. However, there appears to be an additional impact on hotels, one that requires a bit of explaining. (Before we get underway, know this Airbnb is simply the largest of these alternate lodging accommodation companies. Its namesake in this article is used as shorthand to represent all others in this category and that Airbnb is not to be singled out in any way.)

Key Developments

Hotel Interactive - 25 August 2017
It’s often said that technology moves fast, and it does, relatively speaking. But the reality is that change of any kind, technology or otherwise, never occurs as fast as we think it’s going to go. If it did we’d all be dialing up our friends and family on the palms of our hands without the help of an iPhone by now as at least one keynote speaker at HITEC suggested years ago. Right now, it seems the big focus is on Voice Activation, but exactly how and when it is incorporated into the typical everyday hotel experience remains to be seen.

Making Passports A Priority

Hotel Interactive - 22 August 2017
We’ve heard a number of major brand leaders, perhaps most notably and frequently Chris Nassetta of Hilton, refer to this as the ‘golden age of travel.’ Driven by factors such as a growing middle class throughout the world and a younger generation which considers travel in large part to be a birthright, these CEOs content that despite shifting fundamentals and an economic cycle that is long past its peak there are still plenty of good times ahead for the U.S. lodging industry. And they attribute that largely to an expected increase in inbound travel to the U.S.
