HFTP Hospitality DPO Task Force Holds First Meeting in Amsterdam, Moves Ahead on Building Resources

HFTP - 15 August 2017
Preparing for the new EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), a framework legislated by all EU member states with a required compliance date of May 25, 2018, international nonprofit association Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP(r)) recruited a team of experts to develop Hospitality Data Protection Officer (HDPO) guidelines and supporting resources for the industry. In addition, the group is designing a certification program specific for HDPOs to demonstrate their competence with the specialized position. A key requirement of the GDPR is that companies who handle large stores of sensitive personal information must assign a DPO, and it is estimated that this could open approximately 28,000 positions across all industries. The HFTP HDPO Task Force held its first meeting last month from July 14-15, 2017 at the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands."I am very pleased with the outcome of our first meeting held in Amsterdam this summer," said Alvaro Hidalgo, managing partner at FIRSTLOGIC Consulting and HFTP HDPO Task Force co-chair. "We have identified areas in which specific solutions (registration challenges, integration of DPO, communication with IT providers and others) are being analyzed, and we are confident to bring those solutions to the industry this autumn."The HFTP HDPO Task Force consists of 23 members representing a three-dimensional cross section of the hospitality industry including: global, regional and local hotel operators; IT and service provider vendors (distribution, marketing, CRM, etc.); academics and counselors specialized in data protection regulations; members of large multinational groups as well as medium and small companies from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, United States, Switzerland, UAE, Belgium, Netherlands and Spain. The HFTP HDPO Task Force committee consists of the following hospitality industry leaders:Nigel Allport, vice president of EMEA at Digital Alchemy, United KingdomKen Bailey, managing director of public sector at Fortalice Solutions, USASjoerd Blum, CIO at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, The NetherlandsStephen Carter, OBE, general manager at Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa, United KingdomDennis Collet, CEO at NextRound Ltd, United KingdomLuis del Olmo Pinero, president and chairman at Idiso, SpainRichard Harrington, director of finance of luxury at Splendid Hospitality, United KingdomLucinda Hart, CAE, MBA, COO at HFTP, USA Alvaro Hidalgo, managing partner at FIRSTLOGIC Consulting, SpainDaniel Johnson, COO at Venza, USATimo Kettern, director of IT at Lapithus Hotel Management GmbH, GermanyDennis-Kenji Kipker, research managing director at Universitat Bremen, GermanyJose Medio, Attorney, CIPP/us, CIPP/E, managing director at Privalis Group, USAIan Millar, CHTP, professor of IT at Ecole Hoteliere De Lausanne, SwitzerlandBenny Nur, technical services director at Interstate Europe Hotels & Resorts, United KingdomTar O'Neill, CFO for Jamie Oliver Group, United KingdomSophie Pommois, project director of global distribution at Global Hotel Alliance, SwitzerlandStephanie Timsit, director of finance at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, United KingdomRajesh Vohra, director at Sarova Hotels Ltd., United KingdomCarl Weldon, FIH FHOSPA, COO Europe at HFTP, United KingdomFrank Wolfe, CEO at HFTP, USAJames Wright, vice president of IT field services EMEA at Hilton Worldwide, UAEOguz Can Yildirim, CHT, associate director of information risk management EAME at Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Belgium"By its nature, the hospitality industry manages a vast amount of personal data. The GDPR will set a new standard for data processing/management that will impact both the finance and technology sectors, and any company that offers goods or services to EU residents," said Wolfe. "Unlike previous frameworks, GDPR includes companies outside the EU who either have customers that are EU citizens or who monitor the online identifiers of EU data subjects. HFTP has deemed it critical to develop resources to alleviate the hospitality technology operational changes ahead."HFTP will host a HDPO education session at its upcoming Annual Convention on October 25-27, 2017. Wrapping up 2017, HFTP will produce its inaugural HITEC Dubai counterpart event, in partnership with Naseba, from November 14-15 - serving as the third, and final, HITEC of the year. HFTP and OpenTravel - Announce Newest Partnership in Systems Standards Horizon

HFTP - 25 July 2017
The nonprofit groups, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP(r)) and Open Travel Alliance (OpenTravel) have announced a partnership to accelerate the support of travel industry distribution standards, as well as the creation and adoption of hospitality technology standards across the entire spectrum of the global consumer travel experience. Of top priority to both organizations are mobile standards for use within the industry, which are first on the work list.To facilitate the intended projects, OpenTravel will co-locate its corporate office with HFTP Global headquarters in Austin, Texas, USA, starting in August 2017. The move will enable the organizations to combine resources to help develop standards that ease communications between disparate technology systems, enabling stakeholders to conduct business more efficiently.More than 25 years ago, HFTP was given a mandate by its members to lead in establishing information processing practices and standards explains Frank Wolfe, CEO for HFTP. He said, "HFTP represents stakeholders from the cruise line to the casino, fairway to foodservice, the motel to the midway, and the resort to recreation, across the globe. OpenTravel also represents every one of these verticals, and by partnering on this objective, both of our organizations will better serve our stakeholders."Individually, the two organizations represent stakeholders that do not fully overlap; but combined, there are no other groups that encompass this broad horizontal reach. OpenTravel represents the enterprise and HFTP represents individual professionals, together they represent the full consumer experience."OpenTravel's 1.0 XML Messaging Standards are paramount among the travel standards and our new 2.0 Object Model will positively impact the consumer experience for years to come," said Mike Tinkey, CEO for OpenTravel. "OpenTravel continues to enable the future for the connected consumer end to end with their business and leisure travel across all aspects of travel including, but not limited to, airlines, lodging of all types, cruise lines, car rental firms, railways, ground transportation, leisure suppliers, solutions providers, service providers, travel agencies, tour operators, technology companies and distributors, and events of all types. HFTP's resources will allow us to accelerate standards awareness, adoption and utilization."Both HFTP and OpenTravel are in the process of planning upcoming events in Orlando, Florida USA. Online Travel Agencies and Occupancy Tax: A Proliferation of Lawsuits

HFTP Connect - 14 July 2017
Online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Expedia and Booking.com are the channel of choice for approximately 14 percent of all hotel bookings in the United States. Typically, these channels are responsible for collecting occupancy tax directly from the guest and then pay the hotel directly for the reservations. Recently, OTAs have come under scrutiny for the way they collect occupancy tax. Typically, taxes and fees are bundled together on the OTA website and the guest does not know what portion are taxes and what portion are fees. Furthermore, when the guest selects the option to pay at the hotel, the hotel charges tax on the full rate paid (retail) while the OTA only charges tax on the amount paid to the hotel (wholesale). Since the OTA receives a commission of between 20 to 30 percent, this discrepancy in tax collection can result in millions of dollars of losses to cities, counties and states.

So Long, Farewell 'O Canada!'

HFTP Connect - 13 July 2017
Another HITEC down, and it may have been one of the best yet. “O Canada” how you impressed me! I must admit I had my doubts on what level of turnout there would be, with potential hassles of passports, border crossings and foreign transaction fees. What I did not expect was the ability to dodge all rain storms, because of the genius design of The Path, which allowed me to walk almost anywhere staying inside. I did not expect to pose with the Art Ross and Calder Trophies from the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame (I was ok that the Stanley Cup was off visiting with my beloved Pittsburgh Penguins). And I did not expect to turn in the HITEC Toronto exhibit hall to see a whole peninsula of additional vendor booths just as I thought I had gotten through all of the aisles!

Will Blockchain Technology put Airbnb, Expedia, and Priceline out of business?

HFTP - 12 July 2017
Here are some of the points that the industry audience should find useful:What is Blockchain Technology (BT)?"The blockchain is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value." Alex and Don Tapscott. Both Don and Alex have been keynote speakers for HFTP previously and both received excellent reviews. But there is a lot of information in that one sentence. In an attempt to interpret the statement for our industry, the following is offered:Picture if you will that you are the CXO of a major travel enterprise with thousands of spreadsheets containing thousands of financial transactions that are duplicated at each one of your locations. Then picture that the decentralized network is designed to regularly update the all of the spreadsheets at all of the locations. This is the basics of a blockchain. Is BT something for hospitality to be concerned about or is it just another Y2K?BT is actually the technology behind cryptocurrency (altcoin), the most widely known of which seem to be Bitcoin, and Ethereum. It is real, "in play" and it is something people are already spending billions of dollars on. But, it is highly controversial and has generated a firestorm of headlines...good and bad.Since HITEC Toronto,HFTP has been contacted by a lot of industry VIP's who want to be involved with us because they believe its impact is going to disrupt the industry. Conversely others VIPs in the industry were totally unaware of BT and some contacts have said BT is like Y2K.So with that disclosure, according to a recent interview published in SKIFT (www.skift.com), Fritz Joussen, CEO of TUI Group says "It will be very difficult for intermediaries to have sustainable business cases. These platforms [travel intermediaries] build reach by spending billions on advertising, and then they create monopolistic margins on top of what they have as sales and marketing. They do offer great sales and marketing. Booking.com is a great brand, but they create superior margins because they have monopolistic structures. Blockchain destroys this." Later in the same article, Joussen goes onto explain that his vision of blockchain was a key reason TUI sold Hotelbeds last year for $1.2 billion, moving TUI out of the role of business-to-business intermediary, which he believes blockchain can easily replace. Will BT put Airbnb, Expedia, and Priceline out of business?Research would indicate that if BT catches on as predicted it will change the business model of anyone in the transaction business. But unless these companies don't adapt to the market, they are not going to go away. The good news, unless you are an intermediary, is that anytime that a customer and supplier can cut out all or part of an intermediary in the transaction process should increase money in one or both digital wallets. HFTP is a small company and our transaction fees for currency conversion and credit card processing are HUGE...imagine if your enterprise could erase even a fraction of these due to BT.Another benefit to BT is that it is continually updated, reconciled, and stored in decentralized locations. This makes records transparent and auditable because the transactions cannot be changed in just one place and the network has to "agree" to changes. If this proves to be true, hacking will be virtually impossible. Why is HFTP creating an industry Task Force and what is it going to do?One of the things that makes HFTP a bit different than most people realize is that we represent a very wide group of verticals. These include entities that provide a hospitality experience to its guests, members, or visitors, by providing lodging, food/beverage, recreational and tourism services at establishments such as clubs, hotels, motels, resorts, casinos, restaurants, recreation facilities, tourism, cruise lines, community associations and theme parks. This is a big responsibility for HFTP. According to our bylaws, we "provide leadership in the establishment and enhancement of hospitality accounting, financial management, and information processing practices and standards." Leading the industry to determine BT impact on our industry is right in line with what our members envisioned 65 years ago when we were founded. The mission of the BT Task Force is to study the topic and help HFTP's defined industry make their own decisions on how it will impact the industry and how we should respond to this new technology. How can I get involved in the industry's BT Task Force? If you are interested in being considered for our BT Task Force, please email your interest to blockchain@hftp.org. Volunteers should be prepared to attend at least two in person meetings annually and have employer time and financial support. For those who are unfamiliar with HFTP, we are a global nonprofit hospitality association that uniquely understands the industry's problems. We are recognized as the spokes group for the finance and technology segment of the hospitality industry. HFTP assists our members in finding solutions to industry problems more efficiently than any organization via our expert networks, research, conferences such as HITEC, and certification programs. HFTP has several thousand stakeholders across the globe. Through our HITEC brand, we also assist both members and stakeholders in deal facilitation.

What I Learned at HITEC Toronto

HFTP Connect - 6 July 2017
Written By: Ron Hardin - Confession: I can not stop playing with the fidget spinner I picked up at the ALICE booth. My wife, a well-known “anti-fidgeter” (ask my kids), rolled her eyes when she saw it come out of my HITEC Toronto swag bag. Correction: In my previous blog post (HITEC Toronto: Our Story Thus Far), I mentioned the “sunset over Lake Erie” as seen from the CN Tower. My gentle readers are either all too polite – or slept through geography – because Toronto is on Lake Ontario, and the lake is southeast of the city – not southwest – so it was technically “sunset over Kitchener.” It was lovely, nonetheless.

13 E20X Pitches and One Home Run

HFTP Connect - 29 June 2017
Written By: Jennifer Jones - As a native to Baltimore, Maryland USA, I was excited to see that the Orioles are in town this week playing the Blue Jays. Now that I reside out west, I do not get to see them much anymore. Granted with a full schedule of meetings, sessions and receptions, sneaking out of HITEC Toronto to catch a few innings just was not possible. However, I made a better decision with my schedule and decided to attend the Entrepreneur 20X (E20X) hospitality technology pitch competition. This was my first time watching the event, and I encourage everyone to make sure that they make E20X a vital part of their HITEC ritual every year.

HITEC Toronto: Our Story Thus Far

HFTP Connect - 28 June 2017
The curtain descends on the second day of HITEC Toronto (#HITECtor), and it has been a busy couple of days. This is my first visit to Toronto, and I hope I get to come back to Canada someday when I have more free time. With the exception of a few showers, we have been blessed with lovely weather. For those of us who have attended this mid-summer event in more southern climes in recent years, the moderate temperatures have literally been a refreshing change.

Getting Organized for HITEC Toronto

HFTP Connect - 22 June 2017
I have attended HITEC now for several years, as both an exhibitor and an attendee. Regardless of my role there, I have learned one valuable lesson: take a vacation after to catch up on sleep! I know that is not realistic, but if my day-to-day job could stop for a week after to allow me to sort through all of the business cards and collateral I collected, not to mention the overflow of emails that came in while at the show, I would not dread the post-HITEC “hangover.”

Why HITEC Toronto Is Important

HFTP Connect - 22 June 2017
It sounds like one of those essays you had to write in school: “what I did on my summer vacation,” “what extracurricular activities mean to me.” It also sounds blindingly obvious – of course HITEC Toronto is important. After all, it is by far the world’s largest and oldest hospitality technology exposition and conference brand. HITEC Toronto is also historically significant, being the first-ever HITEC North America event to be held outside of the United States. #HITECtor will take center stage from June 26-29, anchoring a trilogy of international events in 2017 that include the debut of HITEC Amsterdam and HITEC Dubai. So, HITEC is clearly a big deal. But why?

Hospitality Technology Pioneers Recognized with Quinquennial HFTP Award of Merit

HFTP - 13 June 2017
Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP(r)) is proud to announce the honorees Keith Gruen, Hiroo Ichii and Dr. Ravi Mehrota as the 2017 Hospitality Technology Award of Merit recipients. The three individuals, chosen for his/her unique contribution to hospitality technology, will be recognized at the Opening Keynote of the 45th Annual Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC(r)) in Toronto, Ontario Canada this month. The Technology Award of Merit is given every five years at HITEC, and was presented in 2002, 2007 and 2012. HFTP created the Technology Award of Merit to recognize hospitality technology pioneers who have made a significant innovation or breakthrough that established a path for others in hospitality technology. Recipients are selected by members of HFTP's International Hospitality Technology Hall of Fame, a group of industry professionals who have been recognized for their influence on the industry.Keith Gruen was recognized for his work in developing the early, widely-adopted PMS system, Fidelio. He was a co-developer for the software that was initially written to manage opera company bookings in Munich, and which developed into a full-fledged PMS that they named Fidelio, the title of Beethoven's only opera. The system broke new ground by introducing color screens, PC networks, user-friendly menus, overlapping windows, easily configurable screens and reports, and a graphical room rack and floorplan. Fidelio was acquired by Micros in 1995, and became the defacto standard system for many major hotel chains. Gruen turned his focus to the venture capital sector with success, but inevitably made his way back to hospitality where he has been involved in next generation hotel systems. He is currently CEO at ysura, a life sciences CRM, as well as a board member at Hetras and advisor for Apaleo, two hospitality technology companies.Hiroo Ichii was recognized for his work in developing ground-breaking communication networks for the hospitality environment. Ichii started as a software engineer and then moved to global network system sales support for enterprise communications and managed projects throughout Southeast Asia including Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Sri-Lanka and India. Working with numerous major hotel brands, Ichii oversaw the installation of next-generation IP phone systems for guest rooms and operations. After 36 years with NEC Corporation, Ichii recently announced his retirement, but still remains as an advisor for NEC Solution Innovators, Ltd.Dr. Ravi Mehrotra is currently president, founder and chief scientist at IDeaS Revenue Solutions, and was recognized for his leadership in the field of predictive analytics, forecasting and dynamic price optimization. Since founding IDeaS in 1989, Mehrotra has worked tirelessly to both strengthen and expand hotel revenue management as a science, and revenue management systems as a technology, to assist hotels in achieving their preferred mix of rate, occupancy and RevPAR. He has recognized and detailed concepts and techniques that are now fundamental to hotel revenue management.Previous HFTP Award of Merit winners include: Roger Lane, CHAE (2002); Richard Maloney (2002); Dietmar Muller-Elmau (2002); John Pignataro (2002); Robert Sanford (2002); Joyce Christmas (2007); William (Bill) Duncan (2007); Ed Hollinshead (2007); Joseph Marko (2007); Bill Sullivan, CHTP (2007); The Hon. Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP(r)), producers of Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC(r)), announced today they are laying the groundwork to further globally expand the HITEC brand by also producing HITEC India and HITEC Asia. These educational events, HITEC India and HITEC Asia, will follow the tremendously successful HITEC brand that launched in North America in 1972. HFTP's North American version HITEC Toronto, the largest HITEC of 2017, will take place from June 26-29 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario Canada."Expanding HITEC to India and Asia has been a goal HFTP has worked towards for several years. It is time that we moved from the goal stage to the planning stage," says HFTP International President Lyle Worthington, CHTP, CIO at The Student Hotel in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. "As a global association with members spanning six continents, we believe that the expansion of HITEC will be an opportunity to build the exchange of information within the hospitality technology community, which has gained immense importance within the industry."After HFTP's strategic planning conference in Amsterdam, HFTP has added many new benefits for its members this year. Expanding its club segment education to include a Club Engagement Conference in March of 2018, a new Hospitality Data Protection Officer program, development of new performance indicators for clubs, new chapters of the association and finalizing a research center located in Dubai, UAE later this month."As a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to improve the industry, HFTP continues to respond to its stakeholder's requests' for meaningful projects that expand the industry" says HFTP CEO Frank Wolfe, CAE. "Unlike other educational organizations that operate for-profit, HFTP events are planned by our volunteers and executed by our paid staff. It is this recipe that makes our events so successful. Our education is planned by the industry, for the industry, and the proceeds go back to the industry."Further new plans and programs will be prioritized during the upcoming HFTP Board of Directors meeting held in Toronto following HITEC Toronto.
